DFAT protocol information DFAT documents that can be legalised
A visitor with a valid full overseas licence generally does not need an ACT licence solely because they are visiting. If the overseas licence is not in English, Access Canberra currently states that an official English translation is needed. The current Access Canberra page lists three translation sources: an embassy or consulate; the Department of Home Affairs; or a NAATI-certified translator. Drivers must carry the documents required for their situation, such as their overseas licence and an International Driving Permit; or an overseas licence written in English; or a non-English overseas licence with an official English translation. An ACT resident who holds or is granted a permanent visa may use their overseas licence for three months, after which they must hold an ACT driver licence to drive in the ACT. A temporary-visa holder who is an ACT resident may choose to obtain an ACT licence. The transfer pathway depends on whether the issuing country has recognition status. Recognised and non-recognised pathways are not the same. From 1 July 2025, licence holders from non-recognised countries face additional ACT training and testing requirements and may receive a provisional licence after passing the practical examination. Translation does not remove testing, identity, residency, medical or other licence requirements. ANU also states that each page must contain the required translator details, that the original-language documents must accompany the translations, that it may reject a translation or request one from an alternative authority, and that its list of acceptable sources can change. The University of Canberra currently asks applicants to submit originals or certified copies and, where documents are not in English, a certified translated version with the original. Translation requirements can vary by institution, course and application type. Confirm the current document requirements with the University of Canberra before ordering. The University of Canberra’s Credit Procedure currently states that supporting documentation for credit applications must be in English or accompanied by an approved translation, and that in Australia this typically requires NAATI certification or a comparable international equivalent unless the originating institution authorises the translation. That wording applies to credit applications and is not a course-wide guarantee of acceptance.
