Portuguese and English translation for Australian use

ATIS provides Portuguese-to-English and English-to-Portuguese translation through practitioners holding the appropriate NAATI credential for the required direction where certification is required. Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese are both handled. Portuguese-language documents issued in Timor-Leste can be assessed according to the actual issuing record.

Not every document or receiving organisation requires NAATI certification. Requirements vary by receiving organisation. Customers should confirm the required documents, translation direction, Portuguese variant and certification standard with the receiving authority before they order. ATIS does not determine visa, citizenship, admission, pension, banking or licence-conversion eligibility.

Documents we commonly translate

The groups below are commonly requested. This is not an exhaustive catalogue, and not every listed document requires NAATI certification. If your document is not shown, select Other Document when requesting a quote.

Social Security, INSS and financial records

  • Social Security statements
  • Brazilian INSS records and Statements of Credits
  • Contribution, benefit-payment and pension records
  • Bank statements, account records and bank letters
  • Payslips and income records where offered

Identity and civil-status documents

We regularly assess birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce certificates and judgments, death certificates, passports, civil-registry extracts, name-change records and family-status records. Brazilian and Portuguese identity records can be assessed where the service is available. Driver records include Brazilian driver licences or CNHs and Portuguese driver licences or cartas de condução.

Visible titles often include certidão de nascimento, certidão de casamento and certidão de óbito. The same wording or issuing format does not apply in Brazil, Portugal and Timor-Leste. Older extracts, bilingual pages and later annotations are translated from the page as issued.

ATIS translates the visible record. It does not determine civil-status validity or whether a marriage, divorce or name change is recognised in Australia. Related pages include birth certificate translation, marriage certificate translation, divorce certificate translation, death certificate translation and passport translation.

Police, immigration and administrative documents

Common files include Brazilian Police Certificates, Brazilian police-clearance or criminal-record certificates, Portuguese criminal-record certificates, visa and residency records, citizenship supporting documents, immigration correspondence and other government or administrative records.

Brazil may use descriptions such as certidão de antecedentes criminais. Portugal commonly uses certificado do registo criminal. Exact titles and issuing bodies vary. A police certificate is not necessarily the same document as a police report or court judgment.

ATIS translates the visible document and does not determine whether it satisfies a visa, citizenship or police-check requirement. Not every visa application requires a police certificate. Customers should confirm the required record with the receiving authority. See also police clearance translation and immigration document translation.

Social Security and INSS records

We assess Social Security statements, Brazilian INSS records, an INSS Statement of Credits where that is the visible title, contribution records, benefit-payment statements, retirement or pension records, benefit letters and supporting administrative correspondence.

The visible title depends on the issuing system and date. Records may appear as an extrato previdenciário, a CNIS contribution record, a benefit-payment extract, a credit history, a histórico de créditos or an extrato de pagamento de benefício. Those descriptions are not interchangeable. Use the title and issuing context printed on the customer’s actual document.

ATIS translates the document. It does not advise on pension entitlement, benefit eligibility, tax treatment or Social Security claims, and it is not affiliated with INSS or an Australian social-security agency. Upload every page if all entries are required.

Bank statements and financial records

We translate Brazilian and Portuguese bank statements, account transaction records, bank letters, balance confirmations, financial supporting documents, and payslips or income records where that service is offered.

Multi-page statements should be uploaded in full if all entries are required. Missing pages can change the quote and the completed translation. ATIS translates the visible financial record. It does not provide financial advice, verify balances, authenticate banking records or promise acceptance by banks, lenders, immigration authorities or courts.

Vaccination and medical records

We assess Vaccination History Cards, Brazilian vaccination cards, a caderneta de vacinação where that matches the document, immunisation histories, vaccination certificates, medical certificates and reports, and supporting healthcare records.

Handwritten dates, vaccine names, batch details, stamps and annotations must be legible. ATIS translates visible medical information. It does not interpret clinical significance, validate vaccination status or provide healthcare advice. See also vaccination record translation and medical translation services.

Academic degrees, transcripts and course outlines

We assess academic degrees, degree certificates, diplomas, academic transcripts, grade reports, school and university records, course outlines, unit or subject descriptions, syllabuses, curriculum content, hours, credits and assessment information, professional and trade qualifications, and employment or training certificates.

Course-outline terminology varies. A document may be called an ementa, conteúdo programático, plano de ensino or a subject or unit description. Those terms are not exact synonyms in every institution. Course outlines can be substantially longer and more complex than certificates.

Upload every page and indicate whether tables, credit hours, assessment methods and references must be included. A quote and turnaround are confirmed after assessment. ATIS translates the visible academic record. It does not determine credit transfer, course equivalence, university admission, professional recognition or skills-assessment outcomes. Confirm submission requirements with the receiving university, assessment body or professional organisation. Related pages include academic transcript translation, diploma translation and degree certificate translation.

We can assess powers of attorney or procuração documents, court documents, contracts and agreements, employment certificates, reference letters, trade qualifications, company records, commercial correspondence, property documents and notarial records.

ATIS does not provide legal, migration, employment, conveyancing or business advice. Not every listed document requires NAATI-certified translation. See also legal document translation and business translation services.

Official documents prepared for certified English translation in Australia

Brazilian and European Portuguese accuracy

Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese can differ in vocabulary, spelling, administrative terminology and institutional language. Official document formats also differ across issuing jurisdictions. Brazil’s CNH and Portugal’s carta de condução are not the same document format, and Brazilian and Portuguese police-record terminology differs.

  • Civil-registry annotations and document titles vary by authority and date.
  • Portuguese-language documents from Timor-Leste must be assessed from the actual issuing document rather than assumed Brazilian or Portuguese formats.
  • Older documents may use different terminology and layouts.
  • Documents may be Portuguese-only, bilingual or contain additional local-language material.
  • Handwritten annotations, seals, stamps, marginal notes and endorsements must be legible.

Names, spelling and document layout

Portuguese normally uses the Latin alphabet. Personal names may include diacritics. Compound surnames are common, and name particles may include de, da, do, dos and das. The order and presentation of family names can differ across records.

Customers should provide the passport spelling of each name where consistency matters and supply earlier official translations where consistent treatment is required. ATIS translates the visible record but does not determine a person’s legally correct name.

Dates may appear in day-month-year form, in numerals or in words. Civil-registry annotations, Brazilian averbações, divorce or name-change notes, registration numbers, seals, embossed marks, signatures, handwritten entries, reverse-side endorsements and multi-page attachments all form part of the document when they are visible.

Upload every page, both sides of cards and certificates, every edge, seal, stamp and endorsement, clear colour images, passport spellings, earlier translations where consistency matters, and complete bank, Social Security or academic statements where all entries are required. Illegible content may need to be marked as unclear or omitted from the translation. Perfect reproduction of unclear text is not promised.

Brazilian civil and administrative documents

Brazilian files commonly include birth and marriage certificates, marriage certificates containing divorce annotations, police or criminal-record certificates, CNHs, INSS and Social Security records, bank statements, vaccination cards, academic degrees, transcripts and course outlines.

The title and format depend on the issuing authority and date. ATIS translates visible content and annotations. Translation does not authenticate the source record or establish legal validity or evidentiary sufficiency. Confirm which pages and certification standard the receiving organisation requires.

Portugal and Timor-Leste documents

ATIS handles European Portuguese documents issued in Portugal and Portuguese-language documents issued in Timor-Leste, in Portuguese-to-English and English-to-Portuguese assignments where the required direction and practitioner credential are available.

Portugal examples include civil-registry certificates, criminal-record certificates, driver licences, academic records, employment documents, social-security records, bank statements and legal or notarial documents. Exact titles vary by issuing authority.

ATIS can assess Portuguese-language documents issued in Timor-Leste, subject to document legibility, the required translation direction and appropriately credentialled practitioner availability. ATIS does not claim expertise in every Timor-Leste issuing authority, every local-language component, affiliation with Timor-Leste government bodies, or legal expertise in Timor-Leste. Whether a Timor-Leste document is accepted in Australia is decided by the receiving organisation.

Apostilles, notarisation and legalisation

Translation of an apostille certificate, a notarial endorsement or the attached Portuguese document is different from issuance of an apostille, authentication, notarisation or legalisation. ATIS may translate visible apostille or notarial content where the translation service is available, but does not issue, authenticate, notarise or legalise documents or apostilles.

Customers should confirm with the receiving authority whether they need the original document, an apostille, a translation, notarisation or another certification or authentication step. ATIS does not provide legalisation, migration or government-process advice.

A quote and turnaround are confirmed after the documents have been assessed. We review the language, variant, document type, page count and requested timeframe before work begins.

  3. 3 Approve the order

A quote is provided before work begins. Where NAATI certification is required and available, the assignment is allocated to a practitioner holding the appropriate credential for the required translation direction.

  4. 4 Receive the completed translation
