If you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident with a current and valid overseas driver’s licence, Transport WA currently allows you to drive in Western Australia on that licence for up to three months. You need to apply to transfer the overseas licence within that period. After three months you cannot legally continue driving on the overseas licence, even if it remains current and valid. The transfer process differs according to whether the licence comes from a recognised or non-recognised country or region. An overseas licence submitted to the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) must be written entirely in English. If it is not, it may need an English translation from a translator accepted by DTMI. Current DTMI guidance is category-specific. For a licence from a non-recognised country or region that is written solely in a language other than English, DTMI requires an English translation from an approved translator and, for NAATI translations on that pathway, currently accepts NAATI Certified Translators while excluding Recognised Practising. Requirements can differ where a licence is bilingual, comes from a recognised country or needs extra verification. ATIS can arrange a translation by a suitably credentialed translator. Because DTMI requirements can depend on the issuing country and licence category, confirm the current Transport WA requirements for your circumstances. DTMI also states that translations completed after 1 January 2018 must meet its current translator-credential requirements.
