The notes below describe common Darwin and Northern Territory request types. They are not a substitute for the current official instructions that apply to your application.
A person who remains in the Northern Territory continuously for more than three months must transfer their overseas licence to an NT licence. If they fail to transfer after that period, the current NT guidance states that the overseas licence becomes invalid for driving in the NT. A person driving on a non-English overseas licence generally needs an International Driving Permit, or an official English translation that meets the current NT requirements, and must carry the required original documents while driving. The current NT driving-rules page states that if an International Driving Permit was not obtained from the country of origin, an official translation of the overseas licence into English must be done by an authorised translator in the NT. That published wording is not the same as “any NAATI translator”. This page does not treat a privately arranged ATIS® NAATI translation as automatically meeting MVR’s authorised-translator wording. Confirm the current Motor Vehicle Registry requirements before you drive or order. For transfer applications, the current MVR page permits an International Driving Permit; an official translation of the overseas licence into English by an authorised translator; or an original letter from the overseas licensing authority, accompanied by an authorised translation if the letter is not in English. The transfer pathway depends on whether the issuing country is on MVR’s published recognised-country list. Applicants from countries that are not listed generally need to complete the MVR theory and practical testing pathway. After the NT application process reaches the point described by MVR, the overseas licence becomes invalid for use in the NT and the applicant must comply with the conditions on the NT receipt or interim licence. Passing the theory test alone does not always invalidate the overseas licence. Translation does not remove testing, identity, residency, medical or other licence requirements. Supporting identity or residency documents are a separate category from the licence itself. Current MVR evidence-of-identity guidance states that some non-English identity documents must be translated by the Department of Home Affairs or an accredited translator at Interpreting and Translating Service NT. Do not assume those identity-document rules are identical to the licence-translation wording.
