Russian document translation for Australian requirements

The most common request is Russian-to-English translation of official documents for Australian immigration, education, employment, legal and administrative files. English-to-Russian translation is also available where it suits the receiving authority.

Not every document or receiving organisation requires NAATI certification. Confirm the language direction, format and certification the authority currently asks for before you order. ATIS does not guarantee acceptance by the Department of Home Affairs, courts, universities, state authorities or any other organisation.

Documents we commonly translate

The documents below are commonly translated. This is not an exhaustive list, and not every document requires NAATI certification. If your document is not shown, select Other Document when requesting a quote.

Careful handling of Russian names, stamps and records

Russian documents often use Cyrillic text, patronymics, seals, stamps and handwritten annotations. Soviet-era and post-Soviet forms can also differ in layout and institutional wording. Where a passport or previous official English spelling is supplied, the translator can use it as a reference so names stay consistent across the file.

  • Cyrillic names can be transliterated in more than one way; a preferred English spelling is not guaranteed to be accepted by an authority.
  • Patronymics and other middle-name forms should be translated consistently against the source document and any passport you supply.
  • Seals, stamps and handwritten notes are translated or described where they are legible.
  • Institution names, subjects, grades and qualification titles are taken from the source text rather than standardised to an Australian equivalent.
  • Unclear scans, damaged pages or illegible seals may need review and may be marked as unreadable rather than guessed.

Apostille certificates and notarial endorsements

ATIS can translate an apostille certificate, a notarial endorsement and the attached document. ATIS does not issue, authenticate or legalise apostilles. Those steps are a separate government or authorised-service process.

Customers should confirm whether the receiving authority requires the original document, an apostille, a translation, or another certification step. The order of those steps can vary.

It depends on the receiving authority. Some Australian organisations ask for a NAATI-certified translation; others do not. Translations are assigned to an appropriately credentialled practitioner where NAATI certification is required and available. NAATI certifies individual practitioners; it does not certify ATIS, a language or a document. Confirm the current requirement before you order.
