Khmer document translation for Australian use

The most common request is Khmer-to-English translation of Cambodian official documents for Australian immigration, citizenship, identity, education, employment, legal and administrative files. English-to-Khmer translation is also available where it is appropriate for the organisation that will receive the document.

Not every document or receiving organisation requires NAATI certification. Where NAATI certification is required and available, the assignment is allocated to an appropriately credentialled practitioner. Requirements vary by receiving organisation. Customers should confirm translation and certification requirements with the receiving authority before they order. ATIS does not determine visa, citizenship or benefit eligibility.

Documents we commonly translate

The documents below are commonly translated. This is not an exhaustive list, and not every listed document requires NAATI certification. If your document is not shown, select Other Document when requesting a quote.

Family and household records

  • Family books
  • Family registration records
  • Household or residence books
  • Family relationship documents
  • Supporting family-status records

Family books and household records

Cambodian family records are issued under several titles. Customers commonly upload family books, family registration records, household or residence books and related family-status extracts. Titles and formats vary by issuing authority and period. This page does not treat one family-record title as universal.

These records may list household members, relationships, registration numbers and later handwritten amendments. Upload every page that contains text, tables, stamps or notes so names and dates can be assessed from the source document.

Khmer-document accuracy

Khmer script, names, dates, seals and bilingual wording need to be handled from the source document rather than standardised to an Australian form. Older and newer Cambodian formats can differ, and some records are faded, damaged or only partly legible.

  • Khmer names can have more than one English spelling. Where a passport or earlier official translation is supplied, the translator can use it so names stay consistent across the file.
  • Personal-name order and formatting can differ from English usage. The translation follows the source document and any passport spelling you provide.
  • Khmer and Western numerals, and Gregorian and Buddhist Era dates where both appear, are taken from the source text and described clearly.
  • Seals, stamps, signatures, tables, registration numbers and handwritten annotations are translated or described where they are legible. Unclear portions may be marked as unreadable rather than guessed.
  • Bilingual Khmer/English or Khmer/French forms, and formats that vary by issuing period, are followed as they appear on the document.
  • Clear colour images of the entire front and reverse, including every stamp, seal and endorsement, help the translator work from the full record.

Immigration, healthcare and administrative use

Police or character certificates, visa and residency records, government correspondence and other supporting documents are commonly translated. These items are not always required. Customers should confirm the required documents and certification standard with the receiving authority.

We can assess Khmer-language records intended for administrative, healthcare or aged-care matters. Customers should confirm the required documents and certification standard with the relevant organisation. ATIS does not advise on benefit eligibility, claims or government processes and has no formal relationship with Centrelink, Medicare or any other agency.
